Job Futures IT understand Green IT means more than just
using computers that use less power.
We’ve accepted the challenge in using green technologies
to deliver compelling solutions to all areas of the company and
our members and our customers that will protect the welfare
and sustainability of our planet and save everyone money as
power costs inevitably soar.
Our aim is to not just invest in green products, but to help
our staff and members become more IT effcient.
Becoming Greener
Carbon footprint reduction and accounting are set to impact
heavily on the way we live and do business. It’s everyone’s moral
and social responsibility to reduce his or her carbon emissions at
home and in the workplace. However, this is a responsibility that
will also be a politically legislated responsibility in the near future
with a major consequence to business.
Fact:
- IT is responsible for 2% of global carbon release and
Green IT is widely recognised as the most dominant
consideration in IT looking to the future.
- For every $1 spent on IT hardware a further $4 is spent
operating it through its life.
What can Job Futures IT do to lessen this impact?
- Job Futures IT understand that Green IT means more than
just using computers that use less power.
- We’ve accepted the challenge in using green technologies
to deliver compelling solutions to our customers that will
protect the welfare and sustainability of our planet and
save customers money as power costs inevitably soar.
Our aim is to not just invest in green products, but to help our
customers become more IT effcient.
SmartOptions integrates Intel vPro Technology
Applying Intel vPro technology with SmartOptions gives Job
Futures a way to address power management and support Green
IT initiatives at the user end. By leveraging the Intel capability to
power up and power down machines and enforce policy settings,
Job Futures has the capability to implement significant energy
savings without compromising systems management or
productivity levels.
- All new workstations and laptop computers supplied to
Job Futures by Job Futures IT feature vPro technology.
- Job Futures IT will be rolls out this great new technology
from April 2008.
- Power emissions are eliminated as a whole. this adds up
to a considerable saving over a year for an organisation
of Job Futures size.
- VPro technology eliminates the dificulty of enforcing power management policies across large distributed
infrastructures.
- Greater improved remote support and management
services & systems means less fuel emissions due to less
travel and also less waste in general office resources. Therefore the company reduces it’s carbon footprint
Workstation & Laptop Improvements
Fact:
- Studies suggest that 40% of global IT carbon emissions
come from workstations and monitors.
In tackling this problem Job Futures IT green initiatives include:
- Modern IT systems provide more computing power per
unit of energy (kWh) and thus reduce energy consumption
per unit of computing power.
- The use of ‘Energy Star’ compatible LCD monitors and the
application of power saving schemes to workstations and
laptops save substantial amounts of energy for Job
Futures. With the rollout of Intel vPro Job Futures IT is
deploying optimised power schemes for all workstations
on the Job Futures network.
- All workstations and laptops deployed by Job Futures IT
have multi-core processors that use better than 30% less
consumption than the single core machines they replace,
yet they have an 80% performance increase.
- All the HP workstations exceed the EU’s Waste Electrical
and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive and are
designed to be 90+% recyclable by weight.
- The increased deployment of laptops has lowered direct
energy requirements. Laptop deployment with flexible
working and results in reduced employee commuting and
travel - a significant carbon footprint contributor.
- This provides the Job Futures I.T. user with a significant
reduction in their carbon footprint allowing workers to
perform from home and other remote locations.
Server Consolidation and Data Centralisation
2008 Green Friendly Activities:
- Consolidate and centralise the Job Futures server farm. This has reduced the number of servers and increased
processing utilisation, reduced power consumption
and improved reliability and manageability.
- Retiring old hardware and replacing this with the latest
power efficient server technologies & data storage solutions.
- Relocating servers to our datacenter to achieve further
energy savings. The facility has been specifically designed
with energy efficiency as a vital constraint.
- Greater improved systems infrastructure and its cooling
reduces energy consumption.
The Green Grid
Job Futures IT choose to promote IT solutions from industryleading
technology companies who are members of the Green
Grid global consortium:
- AMD
- APC
- Dell
- Microsoft
- IBM
- Intel
- HP
The Green Grid is a global consortium dedicated to advancing
energy efficiency in datacenters and business computing
ecosystems. Chartered to address power and cooling throughout
datacenters and the information service delivery system. It will
provide industry-wide recommendations on best practices,
metrics and technologies that will improve overall datacenter
energy efficiencies.
Long-term objectives for the Green Grid include deffining new
datacenter power efficiency architecture to implement energy efficiency policies natively through the instrumentation of
devices. Studies attribute 25% of IT carbon emissions come
from datacenters.
Clean Technologies - RoHS Compliance
What is RoHS? RoHS(Reduction of Hazardous Chemicals) is a
European Union (EU) Directive that restricts the use of six very
hazardous substances used in electronic equipment. The removal
of these materials from production and e-waste will reduce the
health risks of exposure. These risks are particularly serious for
the elderly, children, and pregnant women.
Job Futures IT embraces the use of non-hazardous materials and
adoption of environmentally conscious product design. While
RoHS is a European initiative and has no formal legislation in
Australia we believe local IT has an ongoing responsibility to
promote fully RoHS compliant products that address pollution
concerns throughout the product life cycle. Job Futures IT choose
to use hardware suppliers who are deeply committed to RoHS
compliance – their future and ours depends on it. We are partners
with global leaders in networking and computer hardware such as
Adaptec, Cisco, and HP that lead the way in RoHS compliance.
These brands are Job Futures IT’s bread and butter products and
form the backbone of the Job Futures IT network. All new
hardware deployed by Job Futures IT is at the current best
industry level of RoHS compliance.
SmartOptions Remote Management and Support Reduces Travel
Job Futures IT continues to focus on an IT Managed Services
business model which promotes the Green IT initiative through
the use of remote IT management. By remotely managing IT
assets, there is a reduced need to drive to customer sites to
manually repair, update and inventory machines. Less drive time
contributes to an overall reduction in our carbon footprint.
